Beyond this, there isn’t much of an emotional point aside from Deadpool figuring out what it means to matter

This reviewer seems to be, perhaps intentionally, missing the point. The movie’s “emotional core” is, fitting for Deadpool, a metanarrative one. This is the end of the Fox Marvel movies. The cameos and references are not just there for the fun of it, but they feed into the point of the movie. It is giving people some kind of closure to characters and movies they grew up with. It is saying (at one point literally in dialog) that the past, even with its mistakes and missteps, makes you who you are. It is a celebration and a sendoff of a bygone era of superhero movies.

Perhaps the giant ruins of the Fox logo were too subtle.

Yeah this person isn’t even a fan. There’s very little point to any criticism of this film of someone who did not grow up with or experience early adulthood concurrent to Fox era superheroes.

It’s almost a critic proof movie.

Reviews aren’t just for people who’ve seen all the previous movies. A perspective from someone who hasn’t seen the previous ones can be useful for other people who haven’t seen the previous ones. We can’t limit reviews to just people who are fans.

That’s not to say this is a good review.

I 100% agree on principle. But this movie is crafted such that, it would be like reviewing Deathly Hallows part 2 without seeing the first 7 or reading a book.

Sure you could write that review. But who is it for?

I wish there were more sesquipedalian word choices included alongside the various typos that could have been caught with even a single proofread.

What a totally normal and unpretentious article.
