Alright folks. Let’s take a breather. Locking this post. I’ve had more reports on this post than we’ve ever had in the subs history.

Things can get heated, but remember we’re all here for the love of gardening. Text can be misunderstood with the lack of nonverbal cues. Going forward let’s give each other the benefit of the doubt.

Be careful planting these (or having them in the home) if you or your neighbors have cats. This plant is extremely toxic and can cause kidney failure!

They look great tho outside of this PSA.

Outdoor cats (any animal) at wild are illegal outdoors in my city, so that’s more the owners issue here, but great PSA, we will definitely have to be careful if we cut them and bring them in the house though, we have indoor cats. I always try to wash my hands after handling the bulbs/blooms.

Edit, the person has reiterated their stance multiple times while claiming their point is about the plant inside….

To quote another comment of theirs.

I guess I was trying to point that if you care about the cats in your neighborhood maybe you forego the pretty flower.

Quit telling people what to plant in their yards dude, if you can’t control your animals that’s on you, if you ask your neighbor to not plant a flower because your cat constantly escapes, they would laugh at you. This is exactly what you did in your comment and reiterated multiple times. It wasn’t about it being inside.

I would argue you shouldn’t even bring them inside. The amounts necessary for toxicity are insanely low…like a bit of pollen, a small clipping of the leaves or stems, a small puddle of water left behind from rinsing; all of these are potentially toxic to your kitties.

Also side note, illegal or not, cats get out / get lost. Its a bit callous to hold the cats in your neighborhood up to standards of the “law” and careless owners / accidental runaways.

I think that’s a little alarmist to be honest, not all cats are allergic to Lilies, so to just blanket ban them is over the top, train your pets as well, it is a thing.

I have never had a single one of my cats get out in 2 decades, if you want to be careless that’s your fault, the general public isn’t going to go out of their to avoid planting stuff so muffins you constantly somehow let out doesn’t eat them. There’s also ways to address constant runaways, get a shock collar.

I’m sorry, take a little personal accountability for your pets and how you let them out, or do what a good pet owner should do, and fix the problem. Your PSA went from cute PSA to borderline propaganda real fast. Yeesh growmie.

The real PSA is outdoors cats are menace to nature and if you can’t keep them inside because you’re frankly a horrible pet owner, they deserve what happens. I’ll trap them if they come on my property, but the coyotes and bears will get them first before some flowers…. Don’t be an irresponsible pet owner, keep muffins inside, there is ZERO excuse, full stop.

Yikes, you really took that in a weird direction. Lot of judgement and assumption in your post. I’ve also never really had my cat get out but your delusional if you think that can’t happen unless someone is completely careless or a shitty pet owner.

Explain which part is propaganda? ASPCA recommends contacting a vet immediately if you know your cat has been exposed; I’m being “alarmist” for a reason.

The fact that you think people need to worry about what they plant because irresponsible pet owners can’t get their shit together. An outdoor (illegal or legal, still a moronic idea….) cat has a thousand other things to worry about, in fact I do believe if you’re going to be careless they should be eating or taking by a coyote. I have birdhouses and bird feeders, if people are negligent with their animals, I’m giving them a buffet. There is more than one perspective here and your exuding yours as gospel.

Fuck off lmfao. The cats can get fucked the bird population is far more important, but peddle for little muffin dude… yeesh.

To be fair, my second post was more a suggestion you be a responsible pet owner and not bring Lillie’s inside your home. The second part of my message was about how you said since its against the law for animals to be outside (lol) its not your problem as if the law controls where cats go or not go. I guess I was trying to point that if you care about the cats in your neighborhood maybe you forego the pretty flower.

I was trying to be polite and not bring up a derisive topic, especially since I knew your attitude about outside cats from your first comment.

They aren’t outside animals full stop never have been and never will be. Not even sorry, and they can get fucked, and so can your PSA about not planting lilies outside. Even if they’re legal, you should do the responsible thing for nature (and for you cat, they live 3x as long indoors as semi outdoors) and keep them inside.

If anything, letting your cat outside is the cruel act, you’re killing it in 5 years instead of giving it live a long healthy safe life for 15+ years.

I care about nature, that’s why I don’t care that an invasive predator might get what’s coming. Lmfao. But I’ll trap them first, but no love lost.

                  Get your priorities straight dude.

Oh man, this is just the start of my Lille garden blooming, my roses bloomed a few days ago. My columbines are mostly spent, a second round of smaller flowers are coming through though.

If they don’t smell and tend to stay a lot shorter, they’re more likely to be the asiatics. If they grow a lot taller and have a smell (that I personally love), they’re probably the oriental type.

Trumpet and daylilies (along with lily of the valley, calla lily, toad lily, easter lily, turk’s cap, and several others, are a lot easier to tell apart based on looks, but the Asiatic and Oriental types always confuse me until I smell them!

Some references (which, I have to use something as reference every year):

Thanks still learning, I even googled it before commenting and STILL fucked it up… uggh hahah. They are a foot tall, the others are 3-4 feet and haven’t started forming full bulbs yet. Made a post a few days ago.

          Great comment growmie!

No worries! Like I said, I always have to check, between those 2. Looks like you’ll have a ton coming in over the next weeks - of both!

So I guess I have a ton of the Asiatic lilies, a lot of the OT hybrid (also sometimes called Orienpet, but that sorta sounds silly to me), a few trumpets, and a couple oriental.
            😁
Also, that many of the flowers that were sold as star gazer bulbs were definitely not.
