    He was a figure of moderate importance in the 2nd century AD. Born to an upper-middle class family from a small town in Africa, got into politics, hopped into a military career, and excelled enough that he ended up a governor of far-off Britain, and then, after that, appointed as the magistrate in charge of the city of Rome itself, and enforcing the law over other governors, making him one of the most powerful and trusted men in the Empire. Not a bad career for a boy from the provinces!

      Whenever I hear about Romans in Britain I have to think about this story where they found some letters from Romans begging their relatives in the south to send them more socks to that miserable island 😹
