Our analysis shows that Lemmygrad.ml’s top two communities, c/genzedong and c/genzhouarchive, are associated with tankie subreddits, r/GenZedong and r/GenZhou.

    Oh shit they’re onto us

Anyone know what the “ridic, fkn, scheme” keywords apply to? I thought I was the only Pitch Black fan around here

I think they don’t even know themselves and that’s why they didn’t even attempt to explain that table lol. Lots of junk data. It might have come from the r/genzhou port, which they also should have removed from their dataset as it’s an outlier.

      • What about there 6 articles that are practicly the same article with new publication dates, and new titles make you think in anyway they are competent or honest researchers. They learned that they could scream “COMMIE” loud enough and get money

Our manual inspection on the banners of these sub-reddits finds that they fit Peterson’s description of contemporary tankies (Petterson 2020)

    christ this is some slop

im not on to normally nitpick spelling but ‘peterson’ and ‘petterson’ without later citing the work; they asume we know who it is. Ctrl+f ‘peterson’ and its not even in the references so we’re just meant to guess.

im assuming thats jordan peterson too, trash paper lmao

Another one of these? It’s kind of entertaining right now to read this stuff about us, but if too many of these show up it might get burdensome.

edit: a bunch of communities they listed I have literally never seen. Have they conflated lemmygrad.ml with lemmy.ml?

It’s the same “researchers” as last time, they’re just republishing the original terrible paper in different ways, I guess to ride the grant money as far as they can? Their dataset even stops in 2022 despite this being a 2024 paper, it’s literally the longer paper but rehashed 🤦

All the criticisms in this paper essentially boil down to they don’t take state department press releases at face value. Deeply unserious.

    “Primarily criticize Israel”

Correction, we ONLY criticize Isntrael because we aren’t prevaricating moral cowards.

examining content and user interactions on Lemmygrad.ml from its inception in 2019 to one month after the migration of left-wing extremist (specif i cally, tankie) communities that were banned from Reddit, we aim to explore the extent of left-wing extremism on the Decentralized Web.

Using tankie in an academic paper lol.

We also identify posts that support authoritarian regimes, endorse the Russian in-vasion of Ukraine, and feature anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic content.

Did NATO, or Israel commission this? Anti-zionism isn’t anti-semitism, and Israel is committing genocide.

Our manual inspection on the banners of these sub-reddits f i nds that they f i t Peterson’s description of contempo-rary tankies (Petterson 2020),

Are they letting 14 year old edgelords write papers now?

We f i nd that in 2019, the year Lemmygrad.ml was founded, there was a notable peak in the frequency of high scores across TOXICITY, SEVERE TOXICITY, INSULT, IDENTITY ATTACK, THREAT, and PROFANITY models.

Very interesting, profanity, insults, and toxicity against whom exactly?

While many posts condemn an-tisemitism, we also encounter numerous posts that extend beyond criticizing Israel, displaying anti-Zionism and even antisemitism. … Takeaways. Our results show that users of Lemmygrad.ml frequently share posts that support authoritarian regimes, as seen in their support for China, North Korea, and Russia. Moreover, their support can extend beyond backing these authoritarian regimes, even cheering on their violent ac-tions, as evidenced by their posts on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Additionally, we observe anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic behaviors, which show similarities to right-wing extremism (Zannettou et al. 2020). Our analysis suggests a concerning endorsement of authoritarian actions and ex-tremist rhetoric on Lemmygrad.ml, further indicating that left-wing extremist communities on decentralized platforms should receive more attention from the academic commu-nity.

    Israel-funded paper confirmed.

(What follows is a reply to ComradePupIvy’s post on this, I quote them below)

Would you be shocked to hear that the Authors of this are Utkucan Balci, Michael Sirivianos, and Jeremy Blackburn agian? no, well this is there 3rd study and the 3rd one on Lemmygrad. This one being published in 2024.

However despite this being posted in 2024 there is nothing new in this study, and most alarming to me is that it seems to be not so subtly hinting that the Centralised web is the only safe way for the web to be.

Of course. Deplatforming is supposed to work. Liberals think by now we should have all been beaten over the brow and absorbed back into becoming MSNBC liberals (despite many here never having been that to begin with). The fact that a bunch of “extremists” such as us just moved when a mainstream website removed us and made our own space is alarming because the point to pro-censorship types like this of such moves is to “deradicalize” and push people back into the acceptable politics space.

Of course it’s silly to look at a bunch of Marxists who have real grievances against the liberal system, the western-led order, imperialism, etc when you could be looking at how the more extreme parts of the right have been pushed out of the mainstream sites at various times like reddit’s banning of The_Donald and other subs or their long lurking for that matter on the depths of the extremities of the internet like the chans. But that wouldn’t get much funding for these losers because actual social sciences field academics have already written many better papers on those types and the field is kind of full.

These types have no answers to Marxism as anything but this curious aberration, this problematic thing that disagrees with them yet they refuse to study it enough to know why, they just know it’s against “proscribed good things” therefore must be bad thing and extreme. So it’s not how to address our grievances and re-integrate us (as say China did with people exposed to US funded extremist material in Xin’jiang) but more about how to crush, scatter to the wind, etc. And it’s frustrating to them that attempting to crush us and scatter us to the wind just led us to making our own space.

Hatred of an open internet results, proposals for clamp-downs, against individual liberty and other things liberals on the surface claim to care about and be for though of course they’re too cowardly and intellectually empty to actually explore the implications and leave that up for others. And is this turn a result of any personal horror they’ve experienced? Some mass tragedy? No. It’s because they’re angry at those darn tankies who corn-cobbed them on twitter or something. (More likely they’re just failed ‘academics’ who can’t get any funding for anything better, this is a half-assed paper fishing for some money to put nicer bread on their table for a while)

In doing so, we call for a more nuanced understanding of the impacts of Web decentralization and the need for innovative governance mechanisms that safeguard against the proliferation of extremist ideologies

To a white supremacist, equality is extremist

Someday, if there aren’t already, we’ll be seeing papers like “Exploring Faux Academia in the Age of Neo-Imperialism: An Analysis of Pseudo-Intellectual Fascism.” A whole lot of junk papers from western “educational” institutions have a bright future as examples of everything not to do…
