Radio stuff is cool and still around. We had back to back wind storms that knocked down a ton of trees causing power outages, cell service and first responder encrypted radio repeater disruptions. The county EMA held classes for first responders to get amateur radio licences if it happened again.

Newer digital modes are cool and growing in popularity. Meshtastic, JS8 Call, APRS etc. Basically they transmit little packets of data to send text, gps coordinates etc. Some people are using drones to temporarily hoist antenna wires. You can use your phone or laptop to talk to radios. Some old radio guys don’t like this shift but this stuff has always been about innovation and experimentation.
