Need to let loose a primal scream without collecting footnotes first? Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid: Welcome to the Stubsack, your first port of call for learning fresh Awful youā€™ll near-instantly regret.

Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.

If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cutā€™nā€™paste it into its own post ā€” thereā€™s no quota for posting and the bar really isnā€™t that high.

The post Xitter web has spawned soo many ā€œesotericā€ right wing freaks, but thereā€™s no appropriate sneer-space for them. Iā€™m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged ā€œculture criticsā€ who write about everything but understand nothing. Iā€™m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. Theyā€™re inescapable at this point, yet I donā€™t see them mocked (as much as they should be)

Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldnā€™t be surgeons because they didnā€™t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I canā€™t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.

Last weekā€™s thread

People are ā€œblatantly stealing my work,ā€ AI artist complains

When Jason Allen submitted his bombastically named ThĆ©Ć¢tre Dā€™opĆ©ra Spatial to the US Copyright Office, they werenā€™t so easily fooled as the judges back in Colorado. It was decided that the image could not be copyrighted in its entirety because, as an AI-generated image, it lacked the essential element of ā€œhuman authorship". The office decided that, at best, Allen could copyright specific parts of the piece that he worked on himself in Photoshop.

ā€œThe Copyright Officeā€™s refusal to register Theatre Dā€™Opera Spatial has put me in a terrible position, with no recourse against others who are blatantly and repeatedly stealing my work without compensation or credit.ā€ If something about that argument rings strangely familiar, it might be due to the various groups of artists suing the developers of AI image generators for using their work as training data without permission.

Appropriately for this sort of meaningless bilge, the name is also bullshit. The way to say ā€œspace operaā€ in French is ā€œspace operaā€.

ā€œSpace operaā€™s the same, but they call it le space opera.ā€

Itā€™s been a long time since I lived in France, so my sense of what is idiomatic has no doubt grown rusty, but ā€œThĆ©Ć¢tre Dā€™opĆ©raā€ doesnā€™t sound right. The word ā€œThĆ©Ć¢treā€ doesnā€™t belong in a reference to the place where operas are performed. Itā€™s ā€œLā€™opĆ©ra Garnierā€ and ā€œLā€™opĆ©ra Bastilleā€ in Paris and ā€œLā€™opĆ©ra Nouvelā€ in Lyon, for example. Iā€™d read ā€œthĆ©Ć¢tre dā€™opĆ©raā€ as more like ā€œoperatic theatreā€ in the sense of a genre (contrasted with, e.g., spoken-word theatre). I could be completely wrong here, but the title feels like a naive machine translation.
