I’ve seen some other women wearing crew socks over their leggings while running and stretching. It looks like aesthetics over functionality but I may be wrong.

I’ve also seen some younger girls wearing what seems to be like very long socks over their leggings, almost covering their knees.

I don’t see how that can be easy or comfortable to wear or train on the long term but I may be wrong. If you do this, does it work to keep your legs warm?

Any drawbacks?

Sounds like a modern version of leg warmers, which started as a functional thing that turned into fashion.

So probably a combination of both.

Less functional than leg warmers though. Leg warmers were for athletes, especially dancers, to keep their lower legs warm between their slot for warmup and a performance. They always came off for the actual event.

Socks have the benefit of keeping your feet warm too, but you can’t pull them off quickly over your shoes.

Track pants are for essentially the same thing for track and field events (and later for basketball) - a covering to keep you warm while you’re inactive that can be quickly removed once you’re ready to move.

For me it’s to keep my pants in place around my ankles, so there’s no possibility for a cold gap between my pants and socks
