But how are content creators going to make easy money here? I mean churning out mindless drivel in exchange for adrevenue is how they make their living.

I agree with those statements if you’re just a consumer. However, if you’re some sort of content creator, the story is slightly different: your audience might be still solely on the platforms you’re trying to avoid.

Example: I’m a hobbyist photographer; I have like maybe 1000 people following me in total across Facebook and Instagram. I signed up for Pixelfed a few days ago; haven’t explored much yet, but I’d be surprised if I see even one person I know there. Even if I start posting on Pixelfed exclusively, my photos will probably still end up on Facebook and Instagram, possibly with zero credit. Maybe if I start posting to Pixelfed in parallel and slowly move away from Meta, I don’t know…

I was talking to a friend who posts on IG, and has gotten a Pixelfed acct in the past week. They were saying, as we hiked in the wilderness under cloudy skies, less than ideal conditions, that I was the only person they knew on Pixelfed. A few hours later they txt’d me the handle of another friend of theirs, who is on Pixelfed. 100% increase in a few hours. Don’t be afraid of Pixelfed. Jump in with both feet! Be afraid of your Meta incarceration. Join us! We’ll have a great time! @ForestOrca@social.photo

More problematically, nobody was getting paid to Reddit, But Instagram, YouTube and TikTok are some peoples income, and they really don’t have any strong inclination to leave paying platforms. A lot of the truly wild viral content is coming from people trying to make a living out of it.

We are going to have true social interactions on the fediverse. But without algorithmic discovery and paid performers, a lot of people aren’t going to come over. And honestly, I’m just fine with that.

I do wish we could get a solid foot in the Facebook door. There’s an awful lot of semi-private data there that people aren’t getting paid to post that could be free of big media pincers and wallets.

The other side of this is that click through rates on legacy social has cratered. Almost certainly due to bot driven inflated engagement metrics.

For creators, the best choice is probably to post parallel, distributing your content on as many platforms as feasible. That way, you reach even people who only have one of those, and also lower the migration barrier for consumers.

This platforms are really new and it’s hard to switch a social media account when you have a following. You have to decide by yourself if this is a fight you are willing to take. I think the best way to do it is to slowly switch and post both places for some time which might be a long time still.

This also happens for the consumers, if there’s no content to consume it’s hard to switch. That’s why we need content creators to also slowly switch. I try to open first the alternatives and if I find there’s not much content I check back on reddit but I try to not use it if I don’t need to. This takes more effort than just ignoring the whole fediverse thing but I think it’s something worth fighting for. With the current situation I think it has become very obvious that social media (or to put it in another way: how humans communicate with one another) shouldn’t be controlled by a private company.

Love the style. Makes me think that we should start a repository with original files that people can download and iterate on + share with their communities. Do you know if something like that exists / would you be interested in creating and promoting a repository together?

That thread shows everything wrong with lemmy at the moment.

        “Go to lemmy.world”
“No, we need to fight centralization. Go to lemmy.ml instead.”
“No, those are tankies. Go to lemmy.ee [sic] or sh.itjust.works.”
“I’ve switched and now can’t see any posts.”
“Yeah, you need to ctrl+select English and Undetermined as languages in the settings.”
“Use this client, it costs money but it’s only a one-time purchase”.
        “No, use that client.”
“I used that client, but got only server errors.”
“Well, it Works On My MachineTM.”

When you’ve been on Lemmy for a while this might all make some sort of sense, but to everyone else, this is complete and utter madness.

I would drop the “no censorship” “free from manipulation” and “true freedom of speech” none of those are technically true and the later is associated with extremist rhetoric.

Tbh i am not a fan of any of those points:

      • Free from Manipulation: Malicious actors can still make dummy accounts to influcence scores and there is also nothing inherent in the system that truly prevents manipulative content

      • No Censorship. No tracking: Censorship can still happen on a instance basis through bans or defederation, althought those are also necessary tools for other reasons. And no tracking imo also is missleading, simply because everything posted here is public (including up/downvotes), there simply isn’t true privacy in a public forum. It’s better in that it doesn’t follow you around to other websites and such, but still putting it so difinitive is wrong.

      • True freedom of speech: Kind of overlaps with the “no censorship” part i think.

What the fediverse is to me is:

      • Diversity and freedom of choice

      • Resilience against central control

Their failure to do so is inherently their statement to the decentralised nature of the fediverse, that being „Fuck you people, we are the next reddit, and y’all are just trash”.

Here are the main issues with LW

          1. Slowness for some users: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/36299751

          2. Lack of updates on LW. At this moment, LW users still can’t delete media they uploaded. That was a big deal in March 2024: https://tech.michaelaltfield.net/2024/03/04/lemmy-fediverse-gdpr/. Since then, Lemmy allows it since 0.19.4, but LW still runs 0.19.3 (there are plans to update, but at the moment we’re speaking, it’s still not the case)

          3. Power tripping of some LW mods. You can have a look at !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com , with one example: https://lemm.ee/post/49988344/17418849?sort=New

          4. Smaller instances can have issues to keep up with LW due to its size: https://lemm.ee/post/28755787 . Again, those issues were fixed in 0.19.6, but LW is still on 0.19.3.

          5. LW tend to take some debatable policies (https://lemm.ee/post/30444527), the last one being about allowing flat-earthers in the debates: https://lemm.ee/post/52282379. Due to their size, this impacts basically the whole platform.

That’s kind of a structural problem with the fediverse itself. The whole appeal of social media is interacting with people. Less people, less appeal. The fediverse then takes its inherently smaller pool and splits it across different servers, especially once you account for defederation. Instances like lemmy.world are the natural result. Despite the structural drawbacks, a centralized social media with all users in the same space is inherently more appealing to most users

I want lemmy to be decentralised, so it can benefit from the decentralisation that Lemmy offers. It can be as big as you want, but if only one instance houses 95% of all users, then why even use a decentralised Service when you can just use reddit?

Yes, it would, but it would be a good thing.

As a metaphor: you don’t make Linux the next big thing by copying windows, because it is not windows. The same way you can’t become the next reddit, if you just copy reddit and hope all the people won’t be confronted with the decentralised nature of the fediverse. You will loose just about all non tech savvy people if (or more when) .world will be banned because they will think that Lemmy as a whole is now banned. And even if they don’t get banned by america, if the mods on world turn out as fascists, or if they turn world into the next reddit and start milking their userbase for money, those non tech savvy people will not know that other instances exist, so they will once again just live in their parallel society on world.

If you want Lemmy to be a centralised website, just go to reddit.

Should be “no known corporate” tracking or something along those lines.

By interacting with social media, you are creating a trail, such as I do now.

But in the fediverse, no known entity is granted access to that data as a business model or known force.

There is a certain “if Jim from up the street can read it, everyone can” factor.

But, on Facetube or Youbook, they know how long to the millisecond something is on screen, so not only what you’ve posted yourself but what you’ve paid attention to and how much. They’re watching you even when you think you’re not transmitting anything.
