Bilibili and Niconico are often called “Chinese YouTube” and “Japanese YouTube” respectively, to get the general gist of the websites across even though that isn’t quite right. These video sharing platforms are known for their danmaku subtitle/comments system, and are to some extent aimed more at anime-otaku/ACG audiences than general audiences — for instance if you use the official Bilibili app, the not-logged-in default avatar is actually a reference to the YuruYuri anime/manga.

However, while these two video sharing platforms are associated to some extent with anime/manga/video game fans, you can find all sorts of content on either platform. You’ve probably seen memes that first became popular on Niconico without realizing it.

There is some small amount of English-language content on these sites, but you’ll get a lot more out of Bilibili and Niconico if you speak Chinese and Japanese. Otherwise, Bilibili can be useful as a “backup” if YouTube ever stops working on NewPipe/PipePipe, or there’s something uploaded there that’s (no longer) available on YouTube; or Bilibili can sometimes be nice as a way to find things with Chinese subtitles if you know someone who speaks Chinese and has limited English proficiency. As said, Niconico is down right now so that isn’t very useful for anything at the moment.

I’ve started using PipePipe. It’s basically the same as NewPipe except it also supports Bilibili and, if it weren’t down right now, Niconico.

It could be a sign of an imminent attack on Israël.

The character in the first panel of the meme is Kiryuuin Ragyou from Kill la Kill. The reference is a spoiler, but long story short is that Kiryuuin Ragyou is a terrible mother.

The character in the second panel appears to be Nina Einstein from Code Geass. I have not seen Code Geass, but looking into it it appears that Nina’s “usage of tables” refers to an infamous scene in episode 12 in which she masturbates using a table, to a photo of another character whom she has become infatuated with. The “table scene” of Code Geass is noted for lacking any real relevance to the storyline as a whole, and for being tonally dissonant with the rest of the series.

Lastly in the third panel we have Alisa Mikhailovna Kujou, nicknamed Alya, the titular character of Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian, also known as Roshidere. I have not seen this show but the basic premise is readily apparent from the title. Alya has a Russian father, so the joke here is that Alya’s paternal grandfather would’ve served in the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War, and because Gommunism Bad, this means that he committed war crimes against the people of Berlin.

I think I know what you’re trying to point to, but I do not think this is an honest portrayal.

I saw episode one of a docuseries called Deaf And… earlier today, the episode is titled “Deaf Identity”. And one of the interviewees, Dr. Aaron Kelstone, professor of performing arts at NTID, said something that I find relevant to this topic.

People come here [to NTID] and find out what a Deaf identity is, then come to realize, “Oh, that’s not the only thing I am.” For your entire life, the focus is on your hearing. But now you can explore– “I’m also straight,” or “I’m gay,” or “I’m…” There is so much more to who you are. You discover so much more in your identity, whereas before you felt so limited. Everything is about “I can’t hear.” But now, it’s not just that anymore– you are Deaf and all those other things.

Or in other words, it is audism, just this constant background oppression that pervades the lives of the Deaf people who are denied the opportunity to spend time in spaces around fellow Deaf people, that prevents many of them from forming a strong and cohesive identity outside of just being the “Deaf Island” in the “Sea of Hearies”. So these Deaf people need to solve the most pressing issue(s) in their lives, before they can solve the other issues that they face. And for myself it has been similar, from the “I’m not a bisexual trans girl, it’s just not possible, I’m just confused because I’m autistic and fatherless” of my teen years to the “consumption of animal products is profoundly wrong, but I cannot stop doing it until I can reliably buy and prepare my own meals” of today.

And I think on some level if we “personify” different countries, we can say a very similar thing about LGBT+ life in these countries that are being plundered by imperialism. That because of this constant deprivation that these countries face, that the actual infrastructure needed for a successful LGBT+ rights movement cannot form in these countries. This does not mean that their bigotry should be excused or left entirely unopposed, but that it should be seen in its proper context. And the proper context for Lemmy is that this is a FOSS Reddit clone and Nutomic could simply stop being an ass whenever he wants. And as long as he continues to be an ass, his actions should have consequences.

My only acquaintance in Venezuela has come out in support for the opposition. It’s a shame to see, but I haven’t been close to him for many years now, anyways. I just feel ashamed that so many of my online friends have turned out to harbor these types of pro-imperialist beliefs, just because I didn’t think to check their beliefs more thoroughly, or even if I had thought to check thoroughly, that I wouldn’t have been able to identify many reactionary beliefs until more recently. I guess it’s true what people say about 99% of people who speak English or whatever…

I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level is the first thing that comes to my mind. The Little Witch Academia series is also a classic.

To spare the more morbid details, I somehow got it into my head that my dad died because he’d been “poisoned by accidentally swallowing mouthwash”. And so I stopped using mouthwash because I was scared that it would kill me “too”. Eventually this came up in conversation with my mom, and she told me that I was mistaken — but I just never really got back into using mouthwash despite that reassurance. I think a part of this was just that I associated mouthwash with my dad so strongly that using it without him was too uncomfortable.

I mean, my dad dying when I was a preteen, is the thing that stands out. Pretty much everything that’s happened since then has been shaped by his death in some way, everything from my philosophy and politics, to my material hardships, to my heroes and role models, to the way I clean my teeth, to the places I’ve been and people I’ve met and media I’ve enjoyed, and even to the ways I relate to gender, family, work, nationality and language, and society in general, and that’s certainly not an exhaustive list, and all of these things go into each other as well.

I’m not sure if something so profoundly impactful on every facet of one’s life can be described as “for better or worse”, though, rather than that it simply is what it is…

Put simply, in the trolley problem, my continent would pull the lever, and your continent would give drugs to the people tied to the tracks to ease the pain.

Left and right are always relative terms. I like to describe those who feel like they are or could be represented by a political party in the governing coalition of an average western liberal democracy, as the “non plus ultra” left. This comes from the old story of the Pillars of Hercules on either side of the Strait of Gibraltar, which were said to bear the warning “non plus ultra” — “nothing further beyond”. For as far as people knew back then, there truly was no land for sailors to find further to the west of that point; but now Europeans are well aware that there is a whole gargantuan continent across the Atlantic, a continent that makes the idea of the Iberian peninsula and the Maghreb as the furthest western extent of land in the world seem downright laughable.

And so those who call themselves left-wing, but who would be comfortably represented in the government of a liberal democracy… Well, they would be left-wing by the standards of the beliefs which can be comfortably represented in the government of such a country. So they’re left-wing to that extent. But in the grand scheme of things, they’re no further left of the parliamentary center compared to Marxists and anarchists, than Gibraltar is west of the Prime Meridian compared to Alaska. As I’d see it, frankly, all the beliefs which can find success in a liberal democracy, can be said to occupy the same “continent” of politics; and all those beliefs which cannot, can be said to occupy a different “continent”, and those on the former continent would certainly stand to benefit from “crossing the sea”, so to speak.

We never see Americans having to “explain” what Halloween or Thanksgiving is, even when they are knowingly facing a global audience.

Bit idea: whenever a Seppo mentions “Halloween” or “Thanksgiving” or “July 4th”, simply say, “What is that?”

Additionally, people could contribute things like subtitles or translations, so others can discover media from each other’s countries that would never be available through mainstream streaming.

This is a really good and important thing. More people should do subtitling. In fact, right now I’m writing a presentation about my efforts to translate Japanese anime into Norwegian.
