  • a terrifying indicator of how deep the Russian plot to interfere in U.S. politics really goes

It is despicable but remember that they only paid right wing trolls to do what they were already doing. This is how modern corruption works. Conservative and reactionary talk radio all across the US works like this. The only reason the GOP is so successful in rural areas is they are doing the exact same shit Russia is doing. Fund extremists to continue their bullshit. You don’t need a “Quid Pro Quo”, you just need to pick the right weirdos to boost.

And if you think this is terrifying, think of not just what leftists think of this inside the US, think of what people all around the world think of the US election interference. For decades and decades the US has interfered and overthrown democracies. They did in Euromaidan too.

So yeah, fuck Russia, just realize many countries rightfully think the same about the USA.

Honestly the best would be “behind the head” earphones. No tangle. And then add like a few extra grams to include a portable music player and a small battery. Plus usb-c to transfer and recharge. Or plus bluetooth. Best of all worlds.

But what I really want are big noise protection / noise cancelling headphones with an integrated mp3 + opus player plus bluetooth.

  • Thanks for the info, that is interesting. But you do agree that it is specific slang for a specific subculture, and the purpose of slang is to get people invested and define an in-group and out-group.

I read a headline in “all” that was completely incomprehensible to me. It DID make me feel stupid. Clearly this shows how I am not really part of the motorcycle or (UK?) bicycle scene and ignorant ;) Or maybe I am getting old and grumpy. I could have walked over to my wall with the bookshelves, opened the dictionary and looked it up and then “joined in”. I grok! I can speek the leet too! :D

Maybe it is a good PR strategy in order to establish a “fuck cars” counterculture.

  • I totally get what you mean and feel similarly angry about the star wars sequels, but not about the rings of power. Only thing that annoys me is the insertion of varying phenotypes, but no reason to get angry, it’s fantasy. Other than that there are many things to like and a few to dislike.

I also don’t get how everyone claims how they find this or that part of the story so boring, the production design is amazing enough to gloss over parts that you don’t find that interesting.

They also tell the story pretty straightforward without big twists. And they let the viewer experience how Sauron deceived the elves and others, and experience how confused the stranger feels about his purpose. Except for the “no horses” in Episode 4 the storytelling is pretty good.

If you do not talk yourself into a rage and discuss it in a positive sub like r/LOTR_on_Prime you can totally enjoy it.

  • What I think is missing is a kind of signed database version control system. So you make a list of data (maybe just a markdown table) and you sign it wiht a private key and put that in a DHT / distributed hashtable. Then people can use that and you can update the database / list. People can also fork this list, add their own stuff and distribute it as their own and signed with their own private key. And you could have pull requests and merge back good additions. All without requiring proper servers but possibly benefiting from being hosted on a seedbox.

And of course a simple client to find and view such lists.

Ideally you’d have some template that describes typical metadata for a kind of distribute movie database, but also books, subtitles, songs, albums, articles, scientific papers, fonts. But you can also fork the templates and extend them. So you might have a perfectly legit open source database of movies with links to what legit streaming service is selling it, and then an extra template that extends that with magnet releases.

I have never seen something like this though, my puny brain has trouble imagining the technical hurdles. Maybe this could just be done with a simple version control system client. I think torrent V2 also has some extensions that allow update-able torrents (which some FUD confused with this being the default). Or maybe it’s that proper web pages allow people to make money through advertising.
