  • Fuck yes, Carl Sagan. More people need to read Demon Haunted World. I’m happy for his sake that he died before he had to see what we’ve become as a society, but I didn’t think he would have been particularly surprised at how things went down (especially given his cautionary essay about “The Dumbing Down of America” from the same book written in the 80’s)

According to the Psychonautwiki on shrooms (which is fairly reliable in my experience), anything over 50mg of psilocybin is a “heavy” dose. Trouble is, unless you can get your shrooms from a reliable source, guessing the psilocybin content is pretty tricky. The one time I intentionally did a pretty heavy trip on shrooms, it was something like a quarter ounce of dried shrooms, but another time I just had a nibble on one for laughs while drinking with my buddies and it wound up being pretty substantial. If they’re fresh instead of dried or just a different strain or batch, it’s all pretty up in the air, so my advice is to always be ready for a heavy trip unless you’ve already had some experience with that particular batch.

Many, if not most, modern satanists are atheistic satanists. Satan is merely a convenient bit of Judeo-Christian mythology/imagery used to irritate Christians.

While I hesitate to recommend The Satanic Temple due to the actions of one of the founders, their “7 Fundamental Tenets” are a pretty great basis for an atheistic worldview.

Edit: normally, I’d link some resources, but it’s late, I’m on mobile, and search engines exist, so… Sorry, not sorry.

  • Getting a tech for your first win, especially in a match where your team got crushed is a big deal, especially for a new athlete. I wouldn’t call anything about that a participation trophy.

In fact, one of my proudest memories as a HS wrestler was losing by one in a dual meet against our rivals where the coaches asked me to wrestle up two weight classes and my goal was “don’t get teched or pinned.” I lost, but I did my part and the team won (so the inverse of your sitch). I would say that an individual win and team loss or an individual loss but team win are both worth celebrating. That’s one of my favorite things about wrestling is that you can have a good day regardless of who the team is facing or how everyone else does.

  • They fired the cinder blocks to temperature without any metal just to test them and did go through several before they got a number that could be repeatedly heated to temp without crumbling or exploding. They used proper PPE the whole time with professional supervision. edit: also, they were using the cinderblocks as the enclosure, not to support the crucible. they used ceramic alumina rods and stands like those used in pottery kilns for the stands and supports.

Again, you’re missing the point. The point is people get really fucking creative and don’t necessarily let the danger stop them from doing something. So I wouldn’t bet my health that OOP’s pan isn’t contaminated beyond the seasoning.

  • In my experience, people get really creative when it comes to kitchen/garage chemistry, so all I’m saying is I wouldn’t rule out anything that is physically possible.

Especially if we’re talking about one’s personal health.

Edit: since it’s relevant, I literally just taught a lab section that has a research project component, and one group did their project on metallurgy. They were able to use butane Bunsen burner attachments and cinder blocks to make a furnace that was able to melt iron and make some mediocre steel alloys using only stuff you can buy at Home Depot.

  • Chemistry instructor here. It depends on how hot you get the pan. For the most part, the lead is going to stay in the seasoning, like someone mentioned above. However, if it got anywhere close to the melting point of the iron, you could wind up incorporating some of the lead into the iron itself. This seems pretty unlikely, as lead melts at about 325oC and iron melts above 1,500oC, but it’s possible as natural gas and propane burners can get up to above 1,900oC
