  • I watched it with some friends at one of their houses. Halfway through one of them said out loud: “This is kind of shit isn’t it?” I think that basically sums up my feelings on it. I won’t deny that they tried to explore some important themes but it’s such an unmemorable mess that I can’t even remember a few years out if they were successful at all. What I do remember is how uninspired and boring so much of the film was. Especially the fight scenes which are such an important core of the Matrix franchise.

I think they made it very clear early in the movie in a meta way through Neo’s job that nobody really wanted to make it but that they were more or less forced to by Warner Bros. And it seems like it was ultimately made by Lana Wachowski as a fuck you to the studio and went out of its way to piss off the audience.

  • I finished the new Batman: Caped Crusader over the past week and unfortunately found it to be pretty mid overall. I do think there were a few episodes in the middle where the tone and the writing clicked in a way that was quite satisfactory but yeah, fairly disappointed overall. It also bothers me that the animation is often fairly subpar. You would think a Batman show by Bruce Timm would get the necessary resources needed to wow but maybe that was an unfair expectation on my part. I think I’ll probably not watch season 2 unless a lot of people I trust are praising it.

Catching up on some of the Tomorrowverse films. Justice League: Warworld was not good. I couldn’t even really tell you the point of the film. The whole premise of it is just poorly executed. Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One was pretty good though. I think it might have been better if the events of the first half had been it’s own film1, but the second half was genuinely engaging and had some great emotional impact at times. The music was also surprisingly good imo.

I’ve been watching the 2011 The Looney Tunes Show for the first time over the past few weeks and man what a great show. Genuinely some hilarious antics and Lola Bunny in particular is just delightfully unhinged.

Spoilers for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One: 1

The first half covers the formation of the Justice League through Flash’s perspective. Having that be its own movie would have been better and help us get attached to the world and characters more before the Crisis happens.

  • I’m only halfway through but unfortunately I agree with you so far. I remember almost nothing about Batman TAS so I don’t think I’m negatively polarized against Caped Crusader because of nostalgia. If anything I inadvertently compare it to MAWS, which I think is better.

    The animation is not great.

When they’re running it’s kind of hilariously bad. Is it meant to emulate TAS?

  • Deadpool & Wolverine was solid. If you liked the first 2 you’ll like this one. If you didn’t then you’ll probably not like this one either, unless you’re just a huge Wolverine fan. It very much is a Deadpool movie first and foremost for all the good and bad that entails. The one advantage this one has over the previous 2 is that there is some real pathos here courtesy of Hugh Jackman being a very good actor. I think the Cable stuff from the second film kind of touches on similar emotions but it’s better done here.

A Quiet Place: Day One was excellent. I really liked this movie. They captured the tension and confusion of the situation phenomenally. Excellent acting, great set pieces, tight plot. I think the bar scene was incredibly heartfelt. It does kind of struggle with the same issue that the other movies do in that how the monsters work doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense if you really think about it. But that’s not really what the movie is about and it’s easy to overlook when you’re watching.

  • I see a few reasons:

    • Universal appeal
    • Sequel to a generally beloved animated movie that has gotten similar rave reviews.
    • Has a built in audience of kids combined with teenagers/young adults that were kids when the first movie was released.
    • A pretty slow year for movies before Inside Out 2 was released.
    • No real competition until Despicable Me 4 was released like a month later. And IMO Inside Out 2 is just a straight up significantly better movie.

I have also heard stories about schools and psychology institutes getting tickets for teachers/members because the films are seen as a good entry point for understanding children’s emotions. But that was from randos online so I’m not sure how true that is.
