  • But whether or not people understood the joke or it’s funny is irrelevant in the context of the lawsuit. In libel, you need to prove that the guy had malicious intent. Clearly he didn’t and was just trying to be funny. People are all up in arms defending guys like Ressa and Bello for their cyber libel lawsuits when there’s wayyyyy more justification there than this one. Heck, Ressa was 100x more of an asshole when the complainant reasoned with her than Ileiad’s “Is this a threat”.

Confiado is yet another proof why cyber libel needs to be decriminalized. It’s all good when the case has merit, but it’s too open to abuse. No one should be detained just because someone got butthurt.

  • tl,dr: Mon Confiado is suing someone for using him as the placeholder on the grocery store copypasta.

It’s a stupid lawsuit and why I hate cyber libel. It’s a meme! It’s unfortunate that many took it literally (that’s Filipinos on the internet for you), but to say the guy had malicious intent is ridiculous. What does he hope to gain by deliberately ruining your reputation?

At the same time, dude should have read the room and saved himself the trouble by just deleting it. Unlike Maria Ressa who could afford to be arrogant and pay legal fees because she can recoup those costs from the ego strokes she’s getting and being martyrized, you’re just some guy with a pseudonym and lacking in allies. Take the L and live another day. Too late for that, though!

  • The Caloy-Angela Yulo tiff in a nutshell: A “minor” in a poor family gives his parent unfettered access to his bank account once he started making money. To no one’s surprise, maraming withdrawal. Nagkaroon ng falling out, made worse by the mom disliking yung girlfriend (who she sees as a gold digger) and someone he met only because she slid into his DMs when he was already a star.

It’s a tale as old as time and literally the story of most high earners in a poverty-stricken family. Not sure why people are reacting to it like personally affected sila or alam nila saan napunta yung pera, and that they’re celebrating the mom being cut off the winnings.

Personally, I’m more bothered by how we treat our Olympians. The road to the Olympics is hard, iilan lang nakakapunta dun. Manalo matalo they should be well-funded and compensated. Incentive na rin yan for more kids to get into other sports. But we only seem to care pag nanalo na sila ng gold medal. EJ Obiena, Hidilyn Diaz, Carlos Yulo, lahat sila kailangan dumiskarte sa training. Pati nga si Alex Eala (not an Olympian but related) pinabayaan, pero since mayaman siya she had the luxury to tell the government “fuck you” nung saka sila nagpapansin kung kailan nananalo na.

  • The problem I have with history teachers (at least from my experience) is that they tend to have a bias on how they teach it. I’d prefer that they just explain everything as is and let the students decide.

A good example is this, the Marcoses. I’m so sick and tired of the Marcos era being taught in such a black and white way. Puros na lang human rights this, Voltes V that. Or if you’re pro-Marcos, infrastructure this, heinous crimes punished that. No mention at all of his complex relationship with the Americans or lord knows what else was buried because the narrative is always drastically on either side and walang middle ground.
