Nah. With an Android device, you can install the Signal app (it’s even on FDroid now). You’ll need a phone number to register it, but just to receive the code. Could be a mobile number you have, a landline, or a VoIP (ie, jmp.chat) number-- as long as you haven’t already registered for Signal with it.

A Linux device could pose some difficulty, but I think there is progress being made on running Android apps.

The US has always been a piece of shit, and since WW2 has been the single biggest threat actor in the world. For a time, we managed to maintain a strong economy and generally cohesive body politic at home, but those have been steadily eroding. Any of the “good times” you can remember were at best, squandered opportunities to effect real changes that may have prevented the situation we are no waking up to.

You will see weekly (or more frequent) posts like this on .world where they complain about leftist instances and the comments are full of exhortations to block or defederate from lemmygrad, .ml and hexbear.

Not every threat actor has access to every vulnerability. The top spies won’t share their best tools with normal cops, for example. They can’t risk their access/methods coming to light for relatively minor reasons. Consider your threat model, and do your best.
