Oh, it’s not even different manufacturers. Palmetto State Armory has a ton of cheap options, like if you bought a blemished set of their lower grade in 2014ish you could get a full rifle for $400-600, but they also had stuff in the $1500 range that definitely grouped better at 200y (which is the longest distance range I could find that didn’t involve giving money to the NRA which at no point am I willing to do)

Edited to add: my main point was that a 30 year old rifle manufactured well shouldn’t be that far off from a semi-sloppy modern manufacture, and if the reports that the rifle was stolen from his father are true I’d bias towards a nicer one since the same reports say he stole the rifle but not the sights and was firing without them

My basic training was with an M16A2 manufactured in the 80s and after a couple hours and ~100 rounds of practice I could group center with iron sights at 500y (457m) and that’s functionally the same gun. Effective range for an AR-15 should be the same 600y(550m) as the old M16s from the 70s and 80s, extended to ~1000y (914m) with extra training, better sights, and a match grade rifle

Hey! I know it’s been a couple weeks but I figured I’d say that I went down to the lobby at 10am just now, and there’s two guys in there right now swapping out the cash reader. There’s the regular restocker doing his job and a second guy with one of the handheld firmware loader things, I’m not sure if it just needs a software change or if he needs to be there to swap the actual slot, but it does look swappable

Thank you for the explanation, I’m still very new as this is my first Linux and I did no planning or intentional research before swapping over, I just got mad at Windows and was formatting my main dive 15 minutes later. I avoided Mint specifically because I’d seen lemmy threads saying it was using old packages on purpose for stability reasons, and that for actual gaming I’d want rolling release?

I don’t know the difference between Wayland and X11, all I know is that they’re options, and I’m 30 days into the Arch-derived(is that the right term?) Garuda Linux that defaults Wayland with a 3080 and I haven’t had any problems? Aren’t the Mint problems that it’s a stable distro with outdated stuff?

A month ago as of tomorrow I got fed up with Windows and googled “gaming Linux”, picked Garuda because it was near the top result and I like the FFXIV Garuda, was wiping my Windows drive within fifteen minutes of deciding I was done, and have been gaming with my 3080 since. Haven’t touched X11 because Garuda defaults to Wayland and I don’t even know the difference between them, and so far everything has just worked

I’d be really impressed if anyone still gamed on ATI.

I was on reddit slightly before subreddits were added as functionality, so 16ish years, and lemmy to me just feels like that 2008ish reddit except most of the userbase is 40 instead of 18

I have no idea what turning the print monitor off means in either Windows or Linux, I use my Logitech wireless mouse on Linux by plugging in the USB receiver and never thinking about it again, I use my Xbox controller by hitting the Pair button and clicking the Bluetooth icon on my desktop

Edit: I’m an idiot, T series is low power socketed, not mobile. 14900HX has a TDP of 55W but boosts short term to 157W, which is still pretty ridiculous

Something that startled me and is kind of relevant: I bought a new in box Kobo Touch, manufactured in July 2011, battery died with the box still sealed in August 2011. The Kobo Touch was discontinued in 2015, 8 years ago, and when I broke the seal on the box and got it charged, the setup worked exactly as listed in the on screen directions. Going to the provided website redirected to the desktop app download, but the desktop app still supports it and there was a firmware update dated to April 2023 that added compatibility to the newly configured store. I was fully prepared to have to root it and install some janky custom OS just to get it to work but it’s still supported and works out of tbf box despite being 12 years old
