Blaming religion for making people assholes robs them of their agency, letting them off the hook for being assholes organically and allowing the institution to shoulder the blame.
A problem for the people in politics and on social media who are profiting off it without believing in it is that, eventually, either Hamlet syndrome kicks in and you start believing it, or the fascist followers you’ve been yoking get out of control and you need to start doing actual Nazi stuff to save your own skin.
Do you think that gutting Chevron and the FTC’s regulatory authority has anything to do with this?

It’s a challenge.
Southern is still a complex (and, for me, thoroughly unlikable) person with odious views, but it’s an interesting journey if for no other reason than you can see just how powerful a force tribalism is in human psychology; how it lets people get right up to the point of dealing with the incongruity of their tribe versus their safety/well-being/reality.
The other place I saw this is in watching the flat-Earther documentary Behind the Curve: there’s moments in it when you can see people get within a hair’s breath of rationalization, but get held back not by stupidity, or ignorance, but tribalism.
We make a big mistake in thinking that the reason people are the way they are because of ignorance or stupidity. That’s not it; they are the way they are because human tribalism has millions of years of success behind it. Up until, oh, the last hundred years or so, ostracism meant real death, so our monkey brains, though millions of years of selection, developed group cohesion and social strategies to help us stay within our in-group. Unfortunately, in the last century or so, that tribal instinct is proving maladaptive.
It’s a little like how we’re evolved to process sugar, which has hundreds of millions of positive evolutionary enforcement, only to fail at the outside-context problem that is McDonalds & Coca Cola.

When someone tells you you that they’re planning Night of the Long Knives, you should believe them.
Not sure, but Laura Southern had a moment like this and documented it for the world to read.
The onus would be on the left-wing parties to deliver actual progress for people, but that’s not a problem with FPTP or PR: both systems have problems with neoliberal rot, where left- and centre-left parties forget they need to do things for citizens and not billionaires, and their progressivism devolves into green- and rainbow-washing.
The right has the same issue, only when they fail to deliver for citizens, they just scapegoat brown/Jewish/queer/whatever folk and start with progroms.
I mean, you could also have clothing that’s a) not made from plastic and b) lasts longer.
But you know, capitalism.

The Liberals would rather lose to the CPC for a cycle or two than implement PR, which a) drag the whole country leftward, economically, which the donor class doesn’t want, and b) would see them never realize a majority government.
Many that weren’t based on x86 microcompters could do this: Tandem, I mean, Compaq, I mean HP NonStop machines, Sun Ultra Enterprise as you mentioned, IBM s390 and System-Z, several HPUX systems, I’m sure there’s others.
As a Canadian, I can’t imagine our governments spending money on fake potholes when we’re rich in the real thing.

Yes. Because as we’ve seen, sunlight is not a good disinfectant for this kind of thing. Because “sunlight” results in these ideas can get visibility and by association, traction.
Naziism needs to be stomped on whenever, wherever and however it sleazes out from the sewer. Karl Popper made this very clear.
Technically, every religion has it’s extremists. Blaming the religion robs these assholes of agency; they’d be like this if they were athiests.

The people who can stop this are sufficiently privileged that they don’t feel they’ll be affected by Trump, and/or they hate paying taxes more than theyre worried about fascism.
They’re also oblivious to history, both recent (Nazi Germany and the Night of the long knives) and modern day (Putin’s Russia, and the fate of oligarchs who crossed him)
Meanwhile, the Americans have legalized murder in politics.

I’m also starting to think that businesspeople aren’t the Galtian ubermenchen that they think they are, given that they by and large can’t plan more than six months in advance.
