  • I think they mean that they auto bought right before the plunge and are now frustrated because if they had procrastinated a few more days they would now be in a position to buy low with the same money.

That being said, trying to time the market tends to be a losing game for retail investors, as statistically the market is more likely to rise than fall, so earlier is better unless you have better information than the people paid full time to study the market have.

  • In this case, from my understanding, it has more to do with the Bank of Japan rasing interest rates a small amount (.15%), forcing some people who were barrowing yen to invest in stocks (called the Carry Trade) to exit their positions. And because they needed to buy yen to pay back the loans, the yen strengthened vs the US dollar, which forced more people who were investing using barrowed yen to do the same thing, creating a feedback loop of people selling stocks at lower and lower prices as they rushed to be the first to sell and beat the strengthening yen, etc. Since the Carry trade is worth something like 20 Trillion USD, this has had massive effects on the Asian and US stock markets.

All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again.

  • You see here, the problem is that trains are just too efficient. So we made an electric train that wastes half the raw electricity by converting it into and than storing a cryogenic liquid, has to have massive on board lithium ion batteries to not overload the fuel cell by doing weird things like accelerating and to capture energy from breaking, and which at best diverts desperately needed non-methane produced hydrogen from the industries that actually can’t just put in highly efficient electric motors and more commonly at worst is more polluting than burning coal.

This may all be an incredibly expensive and inefficient way to use taxpayer money, but it’s not like the US can afford to put cananary lines over a very short commuter rail line. Overhead electrification is something only very rich and technology advanced countries like Ethiopia and North Korea can achieve, not a poor country like the United States.

Worse, it uses well understood technology over a century old and so would only take a few years to roll out over the entire amarican rail network, not only completely eliminating the two consumers of Diesel fuel that use more than the entire US military, but halving the operating costs of thouse railways.

Much better to spend a decade and half a billion dollars to create a pilot program to study the possibility of maybe replacing fossil fuels with a highly limited, more expensive, and less reliable alternative, maybe, in another few decades of burning oil. That’s what all you climate activists wanted, right? /s

While true, the this time of the year part of the poster makes me think it’s for people putting up Christmas lights who ran the string backwards and don’t want to switch it around. This is also more dangerous because it ensures that a live male plug is lying around far from the suicide cable itself.

  • I presumed because you were talking about the Supreme Court you meant things that might happen before they all died of old age anyway, but I also don’t see any way how term limits lead to a Republican party of integrity and patriotism slowly either.

Especially not when the party is already run by corporations and think tanks far outside of Congress, and haven’t seemed to have much trouble bringing many of the Congressional Republicans who stood up to Trump on Jan 6 heel or retirement.

  • I’ll be honest, I don’t see how term limits or removing Citizens United suddenly leads to a Republican party of integrity and Patriotism?

I mean it’s not like the Republicans lack enough people to rotate through terms, and a lot of their funding goes through think tanks and “independent” news corporations, to say nothing of the fact that their were Republican majorities before the Citizens United ruling, so I don’t see either effecting the number of Republicans in Congress much nor their ability to overlook the justices they appointed going about unethical stuff in order to further the Congressional majority’s own goals.

  • I think Congress failing to do anything about it has more to do with the House being controlled by the same party as the courts and wishing to help them, while the Senate similarly only counts as not controlled by the same party as the courts if you count Republicans who didn’t change any of thier positions but have recently started running as Democrats or Independents because the Republicans moved to far right for them.

This isn’t to say that term limits or an end to Citizens United arn’t good ideas, but it seems strange to suggest that Congress would be quick to impeach a court that’s been doing exactly what the majority of Congress wants without them.

  • Accidents are always going to happen, but people falling onto the tracks is a very routine, predictable, and common occurrence with a well proven and widely implemented solution.

There are always going to be other things to spend money on, but the budget exists to serve the populace, which is why governments figure out what needs to be done, and then figure out how to make that happen.

  • I worry that a lot of the left is going to be hesitant to turn out to vote for a tough on crime cop so soon after we had nationwide protests against people like her and at a time when the stop cop city protests continue to get national coverage.

Meanwhile, I bet Fox is already talking about the DEI hire who never would have been hired to be anything more than a waitress if not for reverse racism.

And we haven’t even gotten to the chance that she isn’t even allowed to show up on the ballot in some Republican ran states because the deadline for submitting candidates already passed or whatever.
