A 5TB portable hard drive only costs as much as three months and can hold most of the stuff you ACTUALLY wanna watch. To be fair, DVDs and BluRays can get expensive but at least that’s yours forever and you don’t have to worry about the studio suddenly deciding you need to subscribe to THEIR bullshit too. If it’s not available outside of streaming, well Gabe Newell said it best.

This may be more involved than most people are willing to go but just wanna add:

• This can be painfully slow without a dedicated GPU. Even low-mid range dedicated is gonna be a huge upgrade over CPU or integrated GPU so get one of those (if you can) or prepare to leave it overnight.
• I recommend playing with Handbrake settings a little. Use options with HEVC (x265) or AV1 for significantly smaller file sizes at the same level of quality. If you’re leaning towards x265, an Nvidia card using the NVENC option is gonna be significantly faster.
• Handbrake has a preview feature which outputs a 30 second segment at the given settings. Very useful if you wanna tune the quality/file size.

Bonus: Look into Jellyfin for a streaming service like interface

I actually liked a lot of S1 and S2 (S2 being peak because enterprise crew just carry the hell out of everything) but I also like edgy and dark media and can overlook a lot if the tone is done in a way that grabs me.

S3 looked promising until the “big reveal”. Couldn’t take it seriously after that. Forced myself thorugh S4 and S5 but those were just straight up annoying. I can’t stand it when things go wrong just because the protagonists are being stupid, or getting held back by some weird moral stance they clearly didn’t have 3 episodes ago. What’s even worse is when it’s so generic I can accurately predict how a 40-60 minute episode will end within the first 10.

Coming directly from Discovery and SNW, the sets and how everything was shot definitely felt dated at first I won’t lie. But it took a couple of false starts, and then actually watching it for more than 10 minutes for me to be super immersed and forget about all of that. Still on Season 1 and I really like the stories being told so far. I’m watching an episode here and there when I’m in the mood but I get the feeling I’m gonna reach a point where I binge the whole thing in an unhealthy amount of time haha.

My intro to Trek was Lower Decks so I’m also excited to see all of the crazy stuff they referenced in passing there :D

Same, I needed more after SNW and wasn’t quite ready for the way 80’s - '00s era Trek was filmed. I actually liked the first two seasons and thought season 3 was okay.

But then we learned about the source of the burn.

And then season 4 happened. And then season 5 happened. It felt like all of these were leaning into my least favorite things about Discovery. By the finale, I was fast forwarding through everything just to get through it.

Watching TNG for the first time now and loving it way more than Disco :)

Yup, that tracks. I think it was a total of about $150 for me starting Y3 and up to the beginning of Y4. When D2 is good, it’s REALLY good, and nothing quite compares to grinding that game with a bunch of friends who are also super into it.

My friends I used to play with I actually met in-game when I was F2P. I couldn’t buy the DLCs myself at the time so they just bought me the DLCs (which I still think is wild and I’m unbelievably grateful for). But the content got stale as hell at around Y4 and they stopped playing for the better part of a year. By the time they were back, they still didn’t wanna do most of the content and I was getting burnt out on the power grind every season. Raids became more about the loot, less about having fun. Eventually we all kinda fell off it. By the time I could pay for it myself, only some of them were playing sporadically, and the monetization kept getting more and more insane (like fuck Bungie for thinking dungeon keys were a good idea).

I really miss those days though and I’d pay in a heartbeat if it meant playing like we used to.

The good main stories are Forsaken (can’t play this anymore afaik), The Witch Queen (may be worth it), and The Final Shape (from what I hear, no context on this one). There’s also some good stories in specific seasons but I don’t know how they’re handling older seasons and whether or not you can still play them. Back when I was actively playing they were cycling them out every year.

A lot of the value in these is the endgame content though. Unless you’re interested in the loot game, lost sectors, exotic missions and/or plan on getting a group together for dungeons and raids, I don’t think it’s worth it. If all you care about is the story, I think you can get much better stories elsewhere.
