I saw a post about Firefox has been going downhill in terms of privacy protection, and figured it was time to take some action. I saw LibreWolf was a decent alternative, but wanted to go all the way and get my laptop off Mac OS while I was at it. So, after some difficulties, I installed Debian Linux and am writing my first post that’s not from Jerboa on my phone!
Congrats! Hope you like it. :) Debian is a good first choice IMHO.

Maybe I should make the jump to librewolf soon, I’ve been putting it off because I’ve been on firefox for decades at this point. Specially since you can even do sync in it, apparently.
Yeah, since it’s just a hardened fork of Firefox, I found switching really easy. Didn’t try out sync tho, so ymmv.
Software packages in Debian are pretty outdated. I’d recommend you to learn NixOS for maximum cutting edge and maximum stability (yes, it’s possible to have both, although, at the expense of compexity and learning curve).

Sick! this is my first post on lemmy but I’ve been daily driving linux for about 5 years now. Once you get over the hump its hard to go back to anything else.
Nice. There’s definitely a learning curve, but it’s much easier these days with so many online support communities.
Oh shoot, you this post reminded me to get off Vivaldi. Congratulations on moving over to Linux, I’m halfway there with my laptop running Mint. Transitioning my desktop is gonna be tough for me, though.

From what you learned is there a version of linux that you would recommend to install on your macbook that doesn’t involve too much tinkering? (Use case: mainly browsing/research and writing, the occasional spreadsheet and presentation app, the idea is to improve longevity of the laptop if possible)
Yeah, if you want to minimize tinkering, running Linux on a VM might be best. Check out UTM, and you can get Debian right from their Gallery page. Linux Mint is another good option, but it may run a little slower, since its not built for Apple silicon.

How are you liking it so far? Also what desktop environment are you using?
It’s pretty good. I’ve used Linux Mint in the past, and haven’t noticed any jarring differences. Then and now I picked Cinnamon for my DE, and if anything it looks more polished than it did before.
