In the longer version you can see the ship lights go out for about 30 seconds prior. It seems plausible that the ship has a power system malfunction and could not recover in time due to inertia.

It really is incredible. With the bit of vagueness about the vehicles in the water, I thought they were expecting to find more, but glad they were able to stop traffic in time.
