If public transport is free or at least considerably cheaper than private car, more people will use it, meaning there’s more space in cities for pedestrians and cyclists, less pollution, what else. How are you planning to pay the train drivers and station staff? I love free transport systems, but they’re never actually free and at least in the UK, there’s so much staked into the system that it’s impossible to just flip a switch, declare it free and expect it to survive.

I would argue that public transport is up there in the top 5 things government SHOULD be funding, as part of critical infrastructure.
