Kinda off topic, but I wish more of these posts were not on the .world instance. They seem to be giving into the censors and becoming more reddit-like over time.

As someone that started on Lemmy post Reddit, I found .world to be the most up front and easy to sign up for. I would love to change off of world but I’m not sure the best alternatives or ways to find them? Do you have any recommendations?

join-lemmy.org has a list of instances you can join. If you just want to look through a list that’s a great place to browse.

If you’re looking for specific recommendations I’d say lemm.ee is great in terms of moderation, they don’t overmoderate and tend not to defederate from many places so users can kinda choose themselves whether or not to block an instance. Dbzer0 is similar, it’s the instance with the big piracy community which .world blocked, and the admin is also great.

Both of those are in the top 10 communities in terms of size though iirc, which ideally people would avoid the biggest instances and join smaller ones to try and prevent centralization like what happened with .world communities.

Lemmy.zip is also great from what I’ve heard, and while it’s not small, it’s top 20 instead of top 10 at least.

Copying my comment from elsewhere :

You can export your settings, subscriptions, blocklists then import that file on your new instance in your settings. Post/comment history won’t copy over but at least you don’t start over from scratch.

Do you happen to know if there is a way to port comment history to a new account yet, please?

Depends on what your interests are but at a bare minimum I’d avoid creating an account or a community on .world (corpo bootlickers), .ml (ultimate power tripping bastard admin), hexbear (highest troll ratio of anywhere)

I’ve got several accts on different instances. Each have their quirks. Like some don’t allow downvotes or different words, and others are federated or defederated with other instances I wanna see or avoid on occasion

The first days of the rush to the fediverse were chaotic, it wasn’t ready for such demand. One of the things lacking was an easy portal to help new users figure out what would work best. The .world instance for whatever reason became the more visible one as more people joined.

You’ve got a few replies to consider - don’t forget that there aren’t just Lemmy instances that see federation, there’s also Mbin (a fork of Kbin) that’s has a different feel to it and can see Mastodon blogs too.

I too would like an answer to this. I started on a much smaller, more local instance, but it would always crashing as soon as I started scrolling. Like every single time I used it. Switched to .world and it’s never happened once.
