Time to close all your accounts on anything owned by Meta, y’all. There is a Fediverse or privacy-oriented version of everything they do. And maybe you won’t find the same people there, but you certainly will find new ones that are definitely worth your time and attention. Ad-free. Nazi-bootlicker-free.

    edit: typo

I use messenger to keep contact with my mom, dad and siblings. If I delete it i literally can’t talk to them so it’s kinda necessary at this point

Your parents and siblings wouldn’t answer you if you texted or called them?

You can deactivate your Facebook account, it keeps messenger ONLY still active. A great step while you encourage them to try a different app.

Of course it can’t work right away for everyone. But it’s a conversation you can have, explain your concerns, why it would be better to move on to a different software.

I used to talk to my family over WhatsApp, until they had a 24h outage and we switched to Signal, to never come back. But I still have dozens of other people there who won’t switch. At some point it’s a tradeoff you decide to make

Deleted my FB account just now.

I’d had the thing since 2003. It was the last non-fedi social media I was holding onto (the only way to keep in touch with certain people, and all that.)

All the power to you! We need to normalize keeping in touch with each other in a more personal way. They robbed writing thoughtful letters, postcards and greeting cards from us.

Now that you mention it, I might be a bit off in my math. It’s not my best subject.

Anyone have a recommendation for a cross platform fediverse app to replace FB Messenger specifically? I don’t use the FB site but I do use Messenger to stay in touch with my family back home and for a group chat with my wife and kids.

Would specifically need macOS, Windows and iOS support.

I stopped using any Meta app and website several years ago, but I lost my 2FA so the only way I can log in to delete the accounts is to send a photo of my ID card and other stuff to Meta to prove who I am, I really don’t feel like doing that. I’m not sure what the best action is, just let it be or do as they ask to be able to delete everything.

I tried to find news articles that supported your claim that more than just democrats was blocked.

I found a couple that said that democrats were blocked, but found it strange that the journalists did not try other obvious hashtags aswell.

Does anyone know of any third party that can verify this?

“In a hyper-partisan environment, even unintentional errors like this can escalate into accusations of partisanship,” he said.

“If these issues are not resolved quickly they risk fuelling conspiracy theories and damaging Meta’s reputation.”

While users who type “#Democrat” or “#Democrats” see no results, the hashtag “Republican” returns 3.3 million posts on the social media platform.

Yeah, no. There are no ‘accusations of partisanship’, there’s straight up blatant partisanship and overt attempts at shaping the narrative and suppressing speech that Der Furher won’t like. There’s no speed short of not implementing it in the first place that would prevent conspiracies from propagating, especially with how hard Fuckerberg is dickriding trump.

I deleted my Facebook account over a decade ago for good reason, and I’m hopeful that people will (but realistic that they won’t) get off of there. That shit hole needs to burn.

The tech giants all try to be your daddy, so you may as well delete them all. None of them are there to help you become a proper, educated adult.

I’m surprised when people keep using them. People still use Google, it’s even the most popular search engine in the world.

Unfortunately, whether we like to admit it or not, Google still has better search quality compared to other competitors, even if the quality of Google search had gone down over the decades. Also, even more unfortunate is that Google creeped and embedded itself into almost every fibre of modern digital society. Trying to avoid anything remotely related to Google is almost impossible because you would be inconveniencing yourself. I still have to use Google Maps to get my way around, unfortunately, because other map services are not great.

Welcome to techno-feudalism. Now I know what left wing critics like Yanis Varoufakis mean by the term. Big tech companies have made themselves lords and we have to stick with them for convenience, and the government could do nothing about it.

There are two user filters in the settings which default to the stricter hiding. Politics and sensitive content.

Some of these might be under either of those filters and even with both set to show content some of these are hidden.

This sounds like what they’d do…

Put everything “good” under “sensitive content” so kids and people who don’t know better leave that stuff hidden because when blatant racism, bigotry, and fascism doesn’t fall under “sensitive content” people will assume that shit is really really fucked up and and keep it hidden.

These asshats are gonna fuck around and get banned everywhere except America and then Americans will flock to other countries social media because normal people don’t want to hang out in a Nazi clubhouse

The fact that they were blocked (even temporarily) is bad enough, even if they unblocked them because people noticed too fast.

I’m sure they’ll continue working on more subtle ways to suppress discussions and control narrative.
