It turns out that the property developer assured the HOA that the farmer and his family would sell their land. “They were more than a little surprised when I told them that we’re currently training the fifth generation to take over, and we have no intention of selling our farm, period.”

if they wanna sue someone, they should be suing the developer and their real estate brokers that lied to them in order to elevate the sale price of the homes they were building.

Haha… maybe this is just a strategy to get the farm on the records saying “no we don’t intend to sell, no we never said to anyone we intended to sell, we explicitly told the real estate developer we would not sell” and then turn around and sue the developer instead.

Why you could not just ask them for an official statement to that extend is a mystery to me. I’d imagine you want a good relationship with your neighbor, especially a farmer that could decide if he starts his morning routine next to your house or on the other end of his farmland. Or if he waits till tomorrow or manures his land on your national holiday where you planned to have a BBQ.

Farmers are businessmen too. And ones that have their farms close to cities and towns have for sure been around this particular block a few times already, I’d expect him to be fine and not lose any sleep over this.

Speaking as someone who owns a house, I cannot fathom mentality of people whose sole purpose in life is to obsess over the value of their house.

I bought my house for living in. It’s not a fucking investment vehicle. It’s where I keep all my stuff.

As a homeowner, I want the value of my house to go down so I don’t have to pay so much in property taxes – I pay more towards property taxes than I do my mortgage at this point.

Looking in at the USA from the outside it seams weird that you guys like freedom and are willing to defend it, yet let things like HOAs exist and stupid shit like jay walking.

Never heard of a residents’ association? They’re common in many countries around the world.

If you think this is a uniquely American thing, you’re sorely mistaken.

Oh yeah we have something similar, but they have no teeth, more like a volunteer lobby group. Then we have parish councils, they can be complete knobs, but there power is tightly controlled through actual laws and legislation. Most of the other types are management companies that oversee things like a block of flats (condo/apartments). Its very strange to have something that covers separate houses.

Psssshhhhhhh, yes! Are you kidding??? We’re great…America is great…

California burning behind me, an open facist is possibly a few days away from becoming president, the housing market has become increasingly not available to the general public, corporations increasingly removing our ability to own ANYTHING without a subscription and internet connection, even if it doesn’t make sense…like a bluetooth connected mop

The HOA can file all the lawsuits they wish. Anyone can! But the judge will certainly throw this out. In fact, I’m a little surprised they found an attorney willing to hang it out there and go for this. These lawyers have to work with their local judges ya know.

The reason we hear about shit like this is precisely because it’s so crazy. The media doesn’t report normal, day-to-day shit.

    “Man Shoots Neighbor With AR-15!”

    Contrast with:

“White Trash Shoots Neighbor in Trailer Park Feud!”

    Or:

    “Cute White Girl Gone Missing!”

    Contrast with:

“3 Native American Sex Workers Missing”

I hate to get all edgy, but the Joker nailed it:

“If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it’s all ‘part of the plan’. But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds!”

Learn to read the news and stifle your outrage. They wouldn’t report it if it didn’t outrage you.

If he’s been doing it before, there are no damages. Like, if what he’s doing causes values to be lower, they were lower beforehand. So to cease he’s not making them whole or anything, he’s simply enriching them. HOA = greedy chucklefucks with a combined IQ of 42 and no basis. Judge is probably gonna laugh too, can’t have it both ways, buying cheap land that’s cheap because it’s next to a farm and then suing to try to raise values

Edit: and zoning, if it’s zoned as such the HOA is gonna eat his fees and get told off

We have a major airport that has been here for ~100 years. But that doesn’t stop the residences under the flight path from attempting to sue, and pushing for it to move to someone else’s neighborhood.

      People are selfish and shitty.

Depends. There is an airport not too far from here, but when we moved in 20 years ago, they were closed from 22:00 to 06:00. Passenger counts declined, and to become an air freight hub, they pressured politicians to be able to fly all night.

I can understand everyone who sues under these changing circumstances.

Zoning typically only takes effect with a change in use or redevelopment. So even if it’s not zoned agricultural it doesn’t matter because the farm will have existing noncomforming status. And if they’re talking 5th-generation they probably have additional protections. For my city and land that hasn’t changed configuration since 1970 is exempt from subdivision standards even in the case of redevelopment.

If they were there first I’d bet money it’s appropriately zoned for such is what I’m meaning. HOA probably got some cheap agricultural land and begged to build, not the other way around, but I might be wrong

It depends. Lots of towns adopt a comp plan that seeks to change lots of the ag zones into SFR, industrial, or commercial over time. So they’ll rezone the properties to have them change when they sell.

In my last city, we’d actually make development agreements with ag owners to annex into the city in return for getting access to water, sewer, and police. We’d agree to exempt them from city taxes so long as they didn’t change land configuration or use, but once they did the new zoning would kick in and everything would have to come into code.

It’s a Reddit story. There are so many of these, so extreme, I’ve gone way past outrage and generally ignore them as fictional. How could this be true?

Plus I really hate it when articles sprinkle in random stock photos as if they were real. At least the last photo says it’s a stock image but why do you have a stock image of a person who is not the person you’re writing about? At least the stock image of a tractor is about a tractor, but come on: we all know what a tractor is: this is misleading or zero value unless it resembles reality. Lazy journalism at its worst

And… Even if it’s true, why is it relevant to most people’s lives? What does it do other than stoke outrage and reinforce the widely held “HOAs bad” view? More than that, reading shit like this over and over again slowly erodes your view of humanity and I think it contributes a lot to general cynicism.

News organizations seem to have completely stopped answering the question of “why are we reporting on this and why should you care?”

I used to make lots of comments on Am I the Asshole posts for this reason. Calling out fake posts, and listing reasons why they are fake. Would get a lot of push back that amounted to “why do you care if it’s fake? It’s a good story and an interesting debate.” I cared because the more you read those stories, taken at face value, the less you think of humanity.

There’s a huge amusement park near my city, built in the middle of nowhere outside of town. Within a year of it being built a bunch of developments started popping up and houses built.

Then those people moved in and immediately started complaining about the noise from the amusement park and the amount of young people running loose

We had a shooting range shut down after 65 years in its location because in the last 20 years a bunch of farmland around it turned into acreages, and the assholes that bought them started complaining non-stop about the shooting range.
