I miss the rains down in Africa.

Such a beautiful idea; after a long, parched stretch of time where you aren’t sure if your water supply will last you long enough to survive, the sky opens up and the rains finally fall. Your saved!

What the heck does blessing the rains do? Extra damage against the undead?

I’d like to say this to singers…

No, maybe you wrote this in your lyrics sheet and planned to say it. But…what you actually said in the song was…

I remember being in a hotel once, and scrolling through channels and saw a concert channel playing a Bruce Springsteen show. And he’s sitting at the piano doing a little monologue about the song, and he doesn’t say douche, but refers to a cover (the Manfred Mann version) and it using “feminine products” instead of deuce, which is what he wrote.

I don’t know what Manfred said, but even the Boss thinks he said douche.

So Bruce Springsteen wrote the original version of “Blinded By the Light”. But Manfred Mann’s version was the one that was a huge hit. And Mann’s version does say “wrapped up like a douche” (versus Springsteen saying “revved up like a duce”).

I saw an interview with Springsteen where he speculated that was the biggest writing mistake he’d made. If only he’d said “wrapped up like a douche”, maybe his version would have sold better.

          subsplease dot org

they essentially strip the official subtitles of any fuckery or mistranslations rather than reworking from the ground up, so its more like a hybrid of official and fan subtitles. HorribleSubs did this for many years before them, so a lot of their work is out there too.

I actually kinda like that, because when the VAs are being cringy and shitty, I can’t tell. All I get is the emotion of the delivery.

And in the past, very passionate or emotional performances were really cringy in English, so I would prefer listening to the original VAs for the delivery of emotion and tone, and read the subs for the meaning.

Exactly. I don’t care whether I understand it or not (I do understand some words and phrases as you learn slowly by hearing the same word(s) over and over again), the tone and the emotions the original VAs have are rare to be seen in the dubs.

I’m reaching a point where I’m exclusively watching dubbed. It’s gotten better in the past decade now that anime companies have a bigger budget to hire better trained voice actors.

Frieren and Delicious in Dungeon English VAs are amazingly spot on.

Depends on anime and country. English dubs just sound off in nearly everything to my non-native ears. Brazilian dubs, on the other hand, often hit a good spot, but that could be nostalgia and/or bias. Portuguese dubs, on the other hand… Dear lord, just no.

That used to be the norm, but many newer anime (and older popular ones) have great dub VA talent.

Someone I know misheard “Tenth Avenue Freestyle” as “Tell the devil you freestyle” and honestly that’s a much more interesting song.

I always heard the lyrics to Cake’s I want a girl as “ I want a girl with the right eye locations”. Seems reasonable enough, nobody wants to date Sloth from the Goonies. And then one day a girl I was talking to told me it was “the right allocations” like measurements, and I’m not sure if I’ve ever felt dumber.

Thats cause they are an interpretation of your own subconscious rather then the pop verse of the writer.

I heard “carved my name into his legacy” instead of “leather seats” in Before He Cheats.

Liked the idea that the truck was this bozos legacy. Considering the line prior is “I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped up four wheel drive” - I thought she keyed her name into the side and that sounded awesome.

Yeah! That was so metal! It also made me think she keyed her name into the side of the truck, which would be much more visible.

“I’ve met a man with too many faces” sounds like three times cooler than “I’m not a man of too many faces”.

I’m here / to remind you / of the cross-eyed bear that you gave to me.

(I used to think the line was about her ex refusing to return to her a teddy bear that he apparently gave her as a gift. Which rather fits with the song’s theme and just seems dickish and spiteful on the ex’s part.)

i misheard lady gaga’s bad romance the first few times. “want you in my rear window, baby, you’re sick;” came across to me as “while in morrowind, your baby is sick.” thought it was a commentary of some sorts lmao.

They do look the way they do because the Tribunal are assholes who got them all cursed. So I like it, they’ve made peace with their faces but never the shame of having super ugly babies so they all get hidden away
